Join the Western Flyer Foundation and Lincoln County Historical Society for a two-part evening of film, conversation, and community, exploring fisheries science—past and present.

The historic fishing vessel Western Flyer, chartered by John Steinbeck and Ed Ricketts in 1940, is once again at sea, now serving as a working platform for education and research. This program connects that legacy to the work happening today in Pacific Northwest fisheries.

Part 1: The Western Flyer 

A short film narrated by Nick Offerman, followed by remarks from Sherry Flumerfelt (Executive Director, Western Flyer Foundation), introducing the vessel, its historic ties to Pacific Northwest fisheries, and its role today as a platform for science, education, and collaboration at sea.

Part 2: Cooperative Fisheries Research – A Panel Conversation

A moderated discussion with scientists and fishermen working together to better understand and manage fisheries in the Pacific Northwest.

Moderated by Jack Barth (Oregon State University), with panelists including:

• Al Pazar (R/V Pacific Surveyor & fisherman)
• Dylan Heppell (OSU)

The Western Flyer will be docked near the Pacific Maritime Heritage Center during the event and visible from the waterfront.
